John Swofford

Young Woman 3, Painting

Artist Statement:
I’m forty-six years old and I’ve done over four hundred paintings that I’m proud of.  The more I paint the more efficient I become, and, although I lost over a decade to schizophrenia, (and the qualified paintings I might’ve produced), I found the right combination of medicines that made it possible for me to paint with both patience and all of my attention.

Painting makes me feel that I am part of something greater than myself; I believe in a collective unconscious, and energies that exist in higher dimensions—driving us to love each other and treat each other with kindness and respect.
