BATHING BLACKBERRIES
in a cold bowl that morning
I was up before your dream
dozed in our depressed love-
seat by the blinded window,
I stood at the sink baptizing
breakfast and bit the brainy
fruit that lasted like laughter
in the darkness of the dawn.
