Sherry Chandler

We scratch words and watch them fade
persuaded that our black ink
can heal the past, vaccinate
grands and greats against our brinks-

manship. Our killer instincts
trump inky pages, fated,
unheeded while we stockpile
arsenals, blood lust unsated.

Sherry Chandler has published four collections of poetry, most recently The Woodcarver’s Wife. Her work has appeared in The Cortland Review, the Louisville Review, and others. She has had awards from the Kentucky Arts Council and the Kentucky Foundation for Women. For more information, visit
