THE RAIN’S SILENCE

Two a.m.
     the rooster song
         throughout the town
& the silence of a
     week-long rain ended
awaken me

I walk out onto
     the rooftop terrace

& there       in the east
     Venus shines bright
         in a patch of sky
Stars speckle the night &
     the hidden moon silvers clouds

But after a while
     the silence of
         returned rain
              falls

Lorraine Caputo is a documentary poet, translator and travel writer.
