PORK CHOP JOHN

Sitting on a butte
In Wyoming one night in
March, I shared porkchop
Sammies with a waif named John.
He looked north and he smiled.
He said,
“Hey, buddy I’m long
For Mary on the Mountain.
You ever seen her?”

I told him yes, once. One Spring
When my heart was in darkness

She graced me her light.

Matt Cooper is a teacher in Wichita, Kansas. He collects wheat pennies and has eight cats. His father was Irish and his mother is Native. He is lucky to have both and to have absorbed equal influence from both. It’s a blessing if there is such a thing.
