PEEPHOLE
A light shows through
the abandoned holes of
what we have left,
refusing to allow us
to forget all that came before,
all that’s still on an
unimaginable horizon,
flowering for no one else,
just there without
and without need,
a patient wave and nod
and an unmistakable promise
flying from the
lips of tomorrow,
and sometimes we see this
from our shaded sanctuary
dribbling down our faces,
the tickle of life,
fresh as anything outside,
even the sickly-sweet weeds,
roots deep in it all,
swaying to a rhythm
of that light that will
outlast every one of our intentions,
and maybe tomorrow
we’ll step outside.
