Artist Statement:
I leave it to the viewer’s eye to evoke new narratives from my collages. I reassemble them from intimate yet anonymous image fragments, suggestive of emotional pathos — like a shadow text, or understated intimations. As such, they do not assume a univocal reading. This is also the reason faces are obscured; not to hide identity, but to universalize the images: they are not one person, but potentially all people. My artistic directions are informed by photo-artists Francesca Woodman and her spiritual heir Brittany Markert, Deborah Turbeville, and Katrien De Blauwer.
JC Alfier’s (they/them) most recent book of poetry is The Shadow Field. Journal credits includeCopper Nickel, Faultline, Fugue, Notre Dame Review, Penn Review, River Styx, and Vassar Review.
